Central Department of Tourism & Summer Resorts > Word of Admiral Ehab Farouk Undersecretary of state

Alexandria is the dream of Alexander the great, the pearl of Caesar’s crown, the throne of Cleopatra, and the pearl of the Mediterranean.

Alexander named it after himself, when he stood by its beautiful shores, its unique location, and spoke his famous words:

"Here…I will build my city which I always dreamt of"

In 332 B.C., his dream became a reality by his architect Deinocrates who planned the new city by joining Pharos Island with Rhakotis coast to create this masterpiece, which was considered Alexander’s gift to the world

Alexandria was built according to big Grecian cities where horizontal and vertical streets are perpendicular similar to a chessboard

Within a century from its foundation, Alexandria became the greatest city of the old world, where ancient civilizations followed throughout different eras in continuity starting with Pharaonic civilization, then Grecian, Roman, and Byzantine, passage through Coptic radiation and Islamic blossoms till the arrival of modern Egypt which interacted with all mentioned civilizations yet, kept its solitary identity.

Alexandria lies on the 31-north latitude. It enjoys a unique geographical location on the Mediterranean at the juncture of Africa, Asia, and Europe. It's bounded on the north by the Mediterranean, on the south by Marriott Lake on the east by Abu Qeir gulf, and on the west by Sidi Kreir. Its coast stretches over 70 km.

Tourism plays an essential role in Alexandria’s economy for its outstanding tourist assets. Tourism industry in Alexandria is reviving a deep rooted past where Alexandria was the hub of eastwest commerce, achieving a present that possesses all tourism industry evaluators, and orienting a future where tourist development, environmental and construction progress and tourist investment are essential posts for tourism future and tourism promotion.

Now, working hard in Alexandria to ensure adequate exposure of its great tourist attributes to serve both international and domestic tourism.
