Archeological Places

Qaitbey’s Fort
- It was built on the site of the old lighthouse of Pharos Island in the fifteenth century by the Mameluke sultan Qaitbey
- It consist of three floors similar to middle centuries forts, also includes a hydro-biological institute
- Recently the fort courtyard and the surrounding area were developed and renewed
- It'ss one of the important archeological places, which attracts tourists from all over the world

Pompey’s Pillar
It’s a marble pillar with height of 26.85 meters, and circumference of 2.70 meters at the bottom and 2.30 meters at the top. It was built in 292 for the memory of Diocletianus the Roman Emperor
It’s the highest monument in the world. There’re two rectangle halls in its west side that might be reached by underground stairway, also two statues for sphinx made of granite in its north side , it dates back to the period of Ptolemy the sixth. There are three statues in its west side
1- A part of Pesmatik the first statue made of granite
2- A statue of Ramsis the second without head
3- A statue of Ramsis the second made of granite

The Roman Amphitheatre
It dates back to the second century, it’s considered the only artifact of this kind left from the Roman era, it's made of limestone, it consists of twelve steps forming a semicircle, and also it includes Roman baths.
Studies showed that there are several public and residential building were founded in the Amphitheatre area in addition to the Roman baths and extended tunnels
An open museum for underwater artifacts in Alexandria
It’s the first open museum for underwater artifacts; it was established by the ministry of culture on a little hill in the Amphitheatre area of Kom El Dekka on an area of 1200 meters. It exhibits 39 ancient artifacts were founded in the eastern post in front of Qaitbey’s fort. It includes a part of Alexandria old lighthouse, a statue of a woman 6.5-meter length. It also includes an obelisk dated back to the nineteenth dynasty, it’s the first exhibited obelisk of underwater artifacts in Egypt and worldwide. It weighs about 18 tons, its base made of sandstone. In addition to a group of sphinx statues dated back to different eras
The cost of this project is estimated for 20 millions L.E.

Catacombs of kom el Shuqafa
It's one of Alexandria tombs from the Roman era it's located in karmouz west of Alexandria Kom el Shuqafa, it's is located in Rahkotis village area.
The digging in Kom El Shokafa started in 1892, but the tomb was excavated in 1900. The tomb is a catacomb type, which was common in the first three centuries. Its name came from the similarity with the Roman Coptic tombs
The catacomb is an expression for under ground tombs. It consists of a spiral stair, which leads to the three under ground levels. It includes
1-Tomb in Tagran Street
It was founded during establishing a building in Cleopatra area; it was in a poor condition. It was moved and rebuilt in the courtyard of Kom El Shuqafa, and the plaster layer, which covered the burying rooms, was fixed
2- Salvago Tomb
It's related to the Grecian Salvago the owner of the land where the tomb was founded. It was transferred and rebuilt in Kom El Shokafa
3- The opened museum and the garden
The supreme council of Antiquities of Archeologist used several surfaces of the place, and the garden to exhibit some monuments, which were found in Kom El Shokafa, some of the shown exhibits a statue of sphinx, a fountain made of granite and some crowns of Grecian posts

Ras El Soda Temple
- It dates back to the second century; it was built by the Roman knight Erador for the benefit of the goddess Isis. It was founded in Ras El Soda area. It was transferred to an area near by Shalalat garden.
-It was established on a high platform reachable by stairs, which lead to a terrace, which includes four marble posts.
- This terrace is the main showroom. It includes three marble statues reachable by a sided stairway in the eastern wall. This temple is a magnificent touristic shrine

Shatbi Tombs
It’s located east of Selsela area, north of St. Mark College towards the sea. It was discovered by a chance in 1893. The tombs date back to the 3rd and 4th century
- Its one of the Ptolemy Tombs
- It started as a tomb for a wealthy family, and then expanded to become a public tomb
Two methods of burying were used
1- The corpse on the funeral bed
2- Burying in holes
